  Weekender May 03-04

No Daily on Friday, only 1 response to the Thursday Daily - that's discouraging.

I hope this weekender gets more activity.

We're back to watching a hummingbird on the nest. Odds are that it's the same one we observed 6 to 8 weeks ago.

This time there is only one egg - 2eggs are more common. But raising just one nestling should make things easier for the incredibly hard-working mother hummer.

Here she is incubating the egg; photo taken 2 days ago...

Every time I see the eggs I am amazed at how small they are: about the size of a small jellybean and maybe slightly larger than a navy bean or a great northern bean.

This was a challenging shot because the area is so dark and I couldn't shoot as slowly as needed and still have any chance of a sharp photo. Fortunately my camera does a good job of taking low-light photos without much noise.

Seeing as you'll all be waking up soon. May as well start a Thursday thread.
I could say a pinch and a punch for the first day of the month. Oops, I did.

A sunset at my place.

Nesting hummingbird, taken 2018-03-25 and reprocessed about an hour ago...

This is a re-post, but that seems appropriate because of some exciting news: the nest near our front door that was built and used to successfully raise two offspring a month or so ago has been renovated, probably by the same female. So we may get to witness another cycle of incubating the eggs and raising the nestlings.

Hi, and happy Monday.
How is everyone?
I have a few errands to do today, but I wanted to drop in and get a thread started before I venture out.

One of the topics for our club meeting was BLUR.
I used this photo for ONE of my blurred entries.

Have a great day all.

  Weekender April 26-27

o start a weekender; no reason it can't be me.

I've taken few photos lately, but here is one from yesterday (2025/04/25). It's some unidentified plant growing in the parkway (the area between the sidewalk and the street) in front of homes in my area. It's probably considered a nuisance invasive plant, but at least it yielded a photo whose colors I like...

Lot's of things going on in my life right now - that's why I've taken few photos. Why is it that after more than 10 years of retirement I find myself with less free time than when I was working 60+ hours a week?

I got outside and did some yardwork this morning.  I usually fill 2 barrels of debris in the summer months once a week.  It is easy now since there is so many dried leaves and dead branches on the ground.  We need to get some mulch to keep down the weeds and make everything look pretty.

Well, here is another photo that I would like to share with you.
This was from my archives.  About two years ago, our club had a field trip to the Detroit Historical Museum.  It was such a great place to visit and take photographs.  When this photo came up on the screen at the club meeting, and I mentioned where I took this photograph, members expressed that they would like to do that shoot again, and others who had never been there jumped in and said that they were eager to go see what it is like.  So I am anxious to return.  I love museums.

When I went, I actually missed an area where they had trains.  How did that happen?  This is the Henry Ford Museum, where there are trains galore and items from all over this country, but a much smaller three-story building showcasing all kinds of DETROIT memorabilia.

Hi again,
I just got back from the gym.  And before I drag out the material and start a new quilting project, I wanted to stop in and say hello.

Here is another from our club meeting.
I have looked at this photo in my archives for several years.  I like the subject and the composition, but no matter what I did, it always looked too busy.  I took this photo on a group shoot with my camera club.  We were walking around an area in Detroit, taking photos of wall art.  I understand that Detroit has been named one of the best cities to view excellent street art.  As we were walking, there was an open door that I stuck my head into and spotted this man working on adding designs to shirts.  But because he was surrounded by so many things, the photo just didn't work for me.

Then I accidentally came upon the idea of removing the colors of things that weren't part of what he was working on.  I was lucky that the red was so vibrant.  So, I removed the blues, greens, and purples.  I left in the reds, yellows, and oranges.  And wallah, I was happy with the result.  I was surprised that it still look believable and NOT like a color selective photo.

When I got a lot of positive reactions from the club members from the photo, I decided to keep my secret to myself and just say thank you.
Now that you know my little secret, you can probably spot the fact that it is missing other colors, but I think I fooled everyone last Thursday, at least I hope so.

Hi ya boys,
I keep saying, I will start taking photos again, but my camera sits in the corner collecting dust.
My photo club was last week on Thursday, so you probably have been expecting me to drop in and share with you some of my club photos.
Four of the five photos I submitted were from my archives.  I was pleased to be able to find something to share and that was brand new to the club.

This one was a manipulated photo using Dynamic Auto Painter, my favorite processor and the most extreme processor. I took this shot at our photo club's indoor shoot using still life set ups.

It showed well on the TV screen at the meeting.
Enjoy your day,
LORELL

I'm gonna be lazy today. I overdid some heavy gardening yesterday (pruning back some thick woody growth, still trying to control the invasive kudzu, and digging up dandelions) and I'm paying for the labor with back pain. I plan so watch some soccer, maybe break out the watercolors, and/or do some reading.

Here's the other hovering hummingbird (a male, most likely a Rufous Hummingbird, taken a little over 6 years ago) displaying red iridescence...

You all have yourselves a good weekend.

Peace and contentment to us all on this Friday.

Yesterday I reworked a couple of photos of a hovering hummingbird approaching a feeder in our inner yard, taken back in 2019.

This appears to be a male, either an Allen's or a Rufous, but since the Rufous is much more common her, I'm going with that. From the position of the wings and tail, I think he was slowing down his approach to the feeder.

Tomorrow I'll post another shot of the same little bird displaying the vibrant iridescence common to many hummingbird.
