Two crops of the same base image, taken yesterday. I didn't desaturate the colors; this was an accurate capture of how the colors appeared under the gray skies...

These were minimally processed: other than cropping, I increased the contrast about 7% and of course did some sharpening to offset the softening introduced by saving for the web.

#2 has more immediate interest, but I slightly prefer #1 because what caught my eye and what I wanted to capture was the gray hues; I like the subtlety of the pale warm colors in this crop.

Which version do you fine folks prefer?

Don't blame me - I didn't vote for him!

Smile Like myself, you see these things and photograph them, take them home and post process them to your own satisfaction.
Then we may show them to others and find that they cannot see what you and I see.
I like both your images because I do look at such things and often photograph them. It is rare for any people to comment on such images.
I actually have a Flickr album devoted to living bark. So, top marks Dave, from me at least. Wink

Here's one from that album.

Dave,
The image on the right looks like the view overlooking a baby bird's nest. The long yellow is the beak and feathers surround the head.

Peter, Your first image makes me think of a well-designed and attractive QUILT.
Oh, by the way, you said that your wife has won awards for her needlework. I would love to see some photographs of her quilts.

Your statement about how we see our photographs and what we see in them inspired me to write what I saw.

Yes Lorell. That's exactly the spirit. We all look and see differently. I was inspired by the patchwork look.
Gosh all that patchwork stuff was done more than forty years ago. I'll see if I can dig some of it out. I'm sure there were photos.
She was also a potter and is now getting into painting. My brother who went from signwriting to coaching basketball which took him to the Olympics and Commonwealth games, he has retired and now is right into painting.
Me? Well my arts are underdeveloped. Never really got the proper training or education. Always was a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. Still, have grown millions of trees and kept people's watches and clocks going. Photgraphed many of the wonders of nature around me. Even that, I taught myself.
Live in the middle of nowhere.

Actually grow a lot of the material in my my photographs.

Which also means I grow the insects and birds etc, that live in and feed off the habitat I grow.

So I paint real landscapes on what is almost a completely blank canvas.
Have even lived long enough to be able to use the art made by the life that killed trees I have planted as my own art, though no pencil crayon nor paintbrush was used.

Nice photos all. I like the bark photos. DW is always looking at bark - I have told her she should have been a botanist. Your two close up photos are excellent Peter.

Great photos, MFI, especially the close-ups.
