It does look to be lichen yes. I don't know the actual species though. It also appears to b peeling off. Maybe it doesn't like the pvc after all.

I have an album called Ends and beginnings with all that in it. Though there are 474 photos to get through there.
Nice way you presented the carving there Rich. Though realistic they also have a touch of the abstract.
