Still cold and snowy but a warm up coming tomorrow!

High windchill yesterday so didn't get out of the car to "work the subject."  Will go back when it is warmer and get a better view of the stature.
This is our Liberal Arts college in town, Dakota Wesleyan University. A brand new building on campus, The School of Business Innovation and Leadership. with a statue out front called, Power of Possibility.
DWU was established in 1885.

Hi Rich. Thanks for starting our Weekender.

Very interesting statue, and well captured.

Today it has been raining lightly since around 9:00 AM. The rains will continue for 3 more days, getting heavier each day.

For some reason I keep taking photos of the back of a sushi restaurant - an odd subject, I admit. Here's one taken December 30, 2019; I probably posted it on WetCanvas back then, but I doubt any will remember...

What I like about this scene is the color palette. The dark walls usually don't appear brown, but I'm glad that's how they turned out. The lights add some warmth and bring out some detail on the walls.

But the star here is (IMO) the sky color: such a pleasing soft gradient from lavender to rosy pink, and I think it works well with the rich browns.

Don't blame me - I didn't vote for him!

Different but interesting subjects in both images. A well captured photo, Rich. Wesleyan, are they Baptists?

Dave, the darkness isn't all that gloomy in your shot, there is a warmth to it.

and Rich, if you want to know more about why Australia is the land of droughts dust and bushfires but at the opposite end, flooding rains. Try this. What's been driving the recent climate events

Hello all,
When I found out today that my SIL was coming over for a visit, I had to do some housecleaning before she arrived.
Besides sleeping in till late, I started the morning by baking some banana bread, so my kitchen was a mess.
We had a nice visit and finished with dinner at my favorite Chinese restaurant.
Now it is time to rest.  The days go by so quickly, as do the weeks, months, etc.

Welcome back, Don. I am sure you brought home some great shots and am anxious to see them.
Rich, That is a great shot of the statue.  It looks like an ice sculpture.  I like the blue translucent effect. Nice looking building too.
Dave, I do remember the several shots you took of the back of these buildings on your morning walks.  Maybe you were practicing on mastering exposure and mood.

This is the second Color Creative shot that I used for the club meeting this past Thursday, even though it was changed to a Black and White.  I got a lot of good positive feedback on it including suggestions of the following:
1)crop away the right side of the composition to the middle of the big black tree in the center.  This will result in the tractor being the star of the composition and not a battle between the tractor and barn being constructed in the background on the right hand side.
2) Change the whole thing to sepia tone.
and 3) use selective coloring and keep the tractor RED with everything else in B&W.

I thought of all three of those when I was using Topaz, Lightroom and Affinity.  But I had no interest in doing #3, I am falling fast out of interest in that kind of effect.  It looks too fake for me now.  I did think to crop away the right-hand side, but found the barn and foliage to be as interesting as the tractor and my eye kept floating between the two subjects.  And I did think that maybe SEPIA would have been a good effect, but since I was already being so abstract with the lines, blurs, etc., I did not want to add yet another change.  I might try some of those now and see how they appear on the screen.

So, first, you will see the original and then the super-adjusted image.

Well, I tried some things and after trying their suggestions, I think I came up with something that I like better .

I combined two of their suggestion.
I changed the photo to a sepia-like tone, but boosted the warmth somewhat and then I also cropped the right side out.
Here is what I got.
What do you think?

Thanks Peter. No Methodists, named after John Wesley.

Quite a weather info page! We just blame the Canadians, Sorry Grant, for our cold weather but it is really Arctic Air.

Good morning all. Back home after a day of hurry up and wait yesterday. Had to be out of the cabin by 0800, then it was a day of transport to a hotel to wait for transport to Ft. Lauderdale airport to fly to Atlanta. Then wait for connecting flight to Columbus... finally home around 10:30, so long day. But no travel issues and luggage made it, so turned out well. It was a fun trip but glad to be home. Unfortunately I don't think I got a lot of "keepers', mostly what I would call travel snapshots.

Nice clean looking building Rich, and statue is interesting. Only 31F here right now but warming up to the 70's by Thursday. Still a shock coming from 80's in Mexico, our last port. Even Ft. Lauderdale was about 70.

I like the low key photo Dave. That is the kind of images I sometimes take.

Lorell, I think I like the last image a bit better as well, although the B&W has an interesting feel.

Here is one of the first photos I made while in Cabo San Lucas waiting to go on a whale watch. Didn't really get any good view of whales, as it turned out. A few brief looks at a humpback whale. Anyway, this is a Red Crab that was on some rocks. I only have a little over a thousand images to go through, many several shots of the same subject, so I have some work ahead of me.

Very nice, Lorell.

Of course it helps to have a strong photo to start with, and you certainly did. Solid composition with excellent leading lines leading toward the COI, and decent values.

Number 2 has dramatic value contrast and a nice soft glow in well chosen places.

But I really like the sepia version. Again, a faultless composition, and some soft areas that serve to emphasize the tractor as the COI.

Well done, as always.

Hi Don, and thanks. That's a stellar photo of the Red Crab. To use your words, it's the kind of image I would produce.

Well, yesterday's NFL games were interesting. Baltimore won easily, to no one's surprise. Green Bay had an excellent game against San Francisco, but the 49ers managed to get the win.

Today's games: I'm sticking with Detroit over Tampa Bay - maybe by 7 points (although one "expert" picks them to win by about 40 points - I doubt that). And I'm now picking KC over Buffalo; it's about time for the Mahomes magic to reappear, and Buffalo will be without some starters due to injury.

Don't blame me - I didn't vote for him!

Thanks Dave! I do remember your photo, wonderful sky and exposure.

Thanks Lorell, I thought it looked icy too and cold because of the blue color. It has more detail than I have shown. I like the sepia one best. Making the tractor the star of the show! Well done!

Welcome back Don, yes all cruises are that way on departure day, exhausting!
Thanks for the comment!
I was on a whale excursion off Nantucket in 2017. Got a few looks. Here is a short video I shot.

Good shot of the crab in it's natural habitat!
