Fryday 12th Jan
#1
I noticed lack of a FRYDAY thread so I started 1. Well the Mercury is buried at -40 C = -40 F
We are not strangers to these temperatures. Actually we have had a pleasant winter until this cold snap.
Here is a hand coloured B&W taken -40 in 1979 when most of the winter was in the deep freeze.

The QE Power plant keeps the water open on the Saskatchewan River. This creates ice fog....

A  very striking image Grant! You did well with the hand coloring. I did quite a few of them too. I think that is where I picked up the idea to become an artist.

Well I guess I can blame you for our -40F temps then. You forgot to shut the door! Going to be that with our winds until Tuesday, not actual temp.

I think I will hop on the stage to Texas! Sepia toned print.

Rich,
A lot of the US has poor weather conditions and some of it is coming North.
Has Texas dodged that bullet? Your sepia is also from a different period in time....

It could hardly be FRYday at those temperatures. Wink

More like it would be that here at +40˚C.

Both different images but both handled very well.

Grant it looks like Texas is going to be 20 degrees cooler than normal for a few days.

Thanks Peter, high heat for you or is that a normal summer temp?

So far this year the maximum hasn't yet got above 37.6˚C. Which is what we would call a mild summer so far. In fact we had a rather mild Christmas too. Though the heat is there in Northern and Western, Central Aust., where temperatures have already been closer to 50˚C. Anomalous conditions have kept the south east cooler and more moist than it usually is in an El Nino year. However, it is not uncommon for my locale to have temperatures above 47˚C. On average we'd get from 8 to 10 days of above 40˚C though during January generally, there would be an average of 14 days above 35˚C often concurrent. Similar in February, our driest month. Average annual rainfall is 406.3mm or 15.9 inches.
In winter the temperatures may get as low a -6˚C.

Governor Arthur Phillip noted the effects of the extreme heat of the summer of 1790/91: ‘from the numbers (of dead bats) that fell into the brook at Rose Hill (Parramatta), the water was tainted for several days, and it was supposed that more than twenty thousand of them were seen within the space of one mile.’
and that was an account from the early settlement around what is now known as Sydney which has arguably the most amenable climate in this state.
