Good morning all. We got back from our trip to New Mexico late Tuesday and I spent most of yesterday recovering, washing clothes, processing photos, etc. Also came back with a head cold which seemed to get worse when I got home. Been trying to look at as many threads as possible but still have some to go. Lots of good stuff in the forum.
Here are a couple of photos from the trip. I'll be posting more in the next few days. Photographers lined up to get a shot of the Snow Geese taking off in the early morning. A Cottonwood tree with nice lighting. I took several photos of this tree and a couple more with similar light over the course of our trip.

Don, too bad about the head cold! Colds this time of year are nasty!
The photo of the line up is a classic! Good one!
Cottonwood tree is gorgeous! Good lighting on it!
Here is a cottonwood tree that is next to the public beach at our lake. When I was in grade school we lived at the lake about four houses away from it. Been a landmark for a long time. Probably growing when the lake was formed in the 1920's.

Currently we have a really hot heat wave start to summer and chuck in a tropical cyclone that currently is cat 4 and likely to reach cat 5 by tonight.
The state's highest maximum so far this week was a sweltering 46.4C on Thursday at Smithville, near the South Australia border, the hottest official air temperature anywhere in NSW for three years.
Tropical cyclone Jasper will both be influenced by the heatwave and in turn will hold the heat wave in place for longer. For some, this means that the cyclone may be pushed northwards and for others it will mean welcome rain will not occur.
That is a nice cottonwood tree Rich. We don't have those here in the SE so it is always nice to see them when we go out west. DW especially likes them.
Brutal heat indeed MFI. We had nice temps in New Mexico while we were out there, with lows in the low upper 20's/low 30's at night and getting into the mid 40's to 50's F during the day. Little rain and we missed the snow that hit Albuquerque so all in all the weather cooperated.
Nice photo Dave. I have a few cacti flowers I will be sharing over the next few days. A few birds, some decent shots of a coyote and collared peccary too. Even saw a fox but didn't get a photo.

1) getting a decently exposed and in-focus photo
2) cropping for a good composition (that diagonal you mentioned)
3) tweaking values here and there - some areas darker and others brighter
4) final sharpening in selected areas to emphasize the COI
5) realizing that I didn't need to mess with color saturation (although that's a step I take on most images
In my processing, I use these 5 steps on nearly every image.
Of course it helps to have an attractive subject (in this case a well-shaped and unblemished flower).
Don't blame me - I didn't vote for him!
