Welcome to Monday, the start of another week.  Quite possibly the last week for this forum. It's been pretty much only Peter, Dave and Rich for the past few weeks. Rich is on vacation this week so he might not be posting. So we'll just have to see how this week goes. In any event, it has been nice knowing everyone.

But, I'll start the week with a manipulated image from a trip to New Mexico a few years ago. We are going back at the end of November so I've been looking over the images. This was a favorite spot for photographers to get a sunset shot with mountains, sandhill cranes and geese getting ready for the night.

Very nice manip, Don.

I've been expecting your announcement about the site's status, and makes sense.

I hope you can keep it open long enough for me to PM the few active members here to:

1) exchange contact info
2) ask them where else their photos can be found
3) tell them about my new Flickr account so any interested can see my photos

And I'm hoping they will let me know how to keep in touch and follow their photography, wherever they end up.

Don't blame me - I didn't vote for him!

Good morning guys,
Yes, I have been expecting the same.
I have to admit that I have not taken many photos lately and even missed several field trips with my photo club.
My latest hobby has consumed my free time and that is quilting.
This past week was our club's monthly meeting; amazingly enough, we continue growing.  We are now up to 29 members!
Participation in the field trips has also increased, I am so happy for the two fellows that took it over. They have done such a great job.

At this month's meeting, we had our annual PRINT contest.  Many of the members submitted some of their best work.  There were two categories, COLOR and BLACK and WHITE.  Now the photos will be presented before a group of people to judge.  This year, there will be a first and second-place winner in each category.  The prices aren't much, membership for one year for the first place winner and $10 for second place, but it is more about the bragging rights.  Now we have to wait a month to find out the results.

I entered two photos, below is my B&W image.  I might have shared an image similar to this one, but I had to crop it to be a 12X18.  The one I think I shared with you before was a square format.

This morning I took my camera and my ND filters to the park.  I wanted to catch the fall colors, what was left of them, and the blurred river water.  I was able to use some NF filters that I had bought years ago for my NIKON lens but it wouldn't fit any of my OLYMPUS lenses.  I never thought about buying an adapter ring.  It worked great and I saved money by not having to buy new filters.

Tomorrow I will share some of those photos. But today is the B&W shot of the FIST, which is the huge sculpted fish of the famous Brown Bomber, Joe Louis. This sits at the foot of Woodward Ave in downtown, Detroit.  If you turn around from facing THE FIST, you have a beautiful view of the Detroit River and across from the River, you can see our neighbors, Canada.

Powerful! That was my initial gut reaction.

Solid composition and excellent control of values, as always.

The dark triangle shape works (an effective eye-stopper on the left side), overcoming some potential issues: 1) it ends precisely at bottom right, a situation that some reason has always bothered me; 2) the top almost ends right at the top edge, something else I try to avoid; 3) in general the triangle's dark value and its dynamic energy should, in theory, distract from the COI.

But it all works. First, the tremendous visual impact of the fist dominates the image, as it should. And I like the subtle tonal variations of the background buildings; maybe they are natural shadows, but I suspect you wisely added them in processing.

Don't blame me - I didn't vote for him!

thanks, Dave, your careful and detailed examination of my image was enjoyable to read. I would have added more space around the edges but unfortunately, the square formatted picture that I took this from would not allow it.  So, I really struggled to get the top of the triangle, the lower right leg, and the tiny area below the forearm on the left into the composition.

You have been a great support to me and I expect many others.  I hope we can continue to share our photos on FLICKR.

Don, that is a nice painterly effect.  I think it serves the subject well.

Agree with Dave's comments on your image, Lorell.
Sad about the potential demise of the forum and thank Don for keeping it going for this long.
Agree with Lorell's thoughts on your image, Don.
Happiness simply is.
There need be no pursuit.
