Lorell,

Wonderful photo and treatment of the Monarch.

My thanks to you and MFI for your reactions to my two photos. Magazine-worthy? I'm not so sure of that. I didn't record what flower it is, but MFI's opinion that it's hibiscus looks right to me.

My analysis of yesterday's World Cup games:

USA has a tendency to start slowly in major events like the Olympics and the World cup, relying on their superior individual talent to overcome this. So why did they perform below expectations in this world Cup?
- 1) I think USA still has superior talent, but that edge over other teams has narrowed.
- 2) But superior talent doesn't mean a superior team. And USA has certainly not been a superior team.
- 3) I'm not sure, but maybe some coaching decisions didn't work out as hoped.
- 4) USA was missing Rose Lavelle against Sweden, and that made a difference. She is an excellent player, strong on defense and very adept at involving the entire team in offensive counter attacks
- And I agree with MFI that Sweden's goalie was fantastic.

My predictions for the remaining games are:

In the remaining Round of 16 games I pick:
- Australia to beat Denmark in a close match
- France to end Morocco's unbelievable World Cup run
- England to beat Nigeria by multiple goals
- Jamaica to upset Colombia to continue their fine World Cup

In the quarter-finals:
- England should beat Jamaica easily
- France to end Australia's World Cup hopes in a close match
- Spain vs Netherlands is hard to predict, but I give the edge to Netherlands by 1 or 2 goals
- and I'm sticking with Japan by predicting a 1 goal win against Sweden in what promises to be the key match of the tournament

3rd place match:
- Spain vs France looks even; I'll pick Spain to win a close match

In the semi-finals:
 - England over France in a close match
 - Japan to handle Spain by 2 goals

CHAMPIONSHIP:
England has gotten healthier and is looking very strong, and Japan has been consistently the best team, excelling in goal differential and more importantly consistently demonstrating near perfect team play on both offense and defense.

So I have Japan beating England in a close match to win it all.

Don't blame me - I didn't vote for him!
