Which crop do I prefer? Of the two that you posted, I go with #1 because it concentrates on the zebra's face. IMO #2 has too much emphasis of the zebra's less interesting back end.
But I'm thinking that your idea of a #3 might be even better: I see a square crop of #2 that positions the zebra's head along or near the left "rule of thirds" vertical as an option worth considering.
