While at a local mini-mall yesterday I saw these tough woody vines ascending a wide and tall palm. They had reached 12-15 feet up the trunk, but still had another 40 feet or more to go if the goal was to reach the top.
This is a full-color shot, pretty much how the vines and palm trunk looked under the gray morning sky that is typical in coastal SoCal in June...
Don't blame me - I didn't vote for him!

Good morning, Dave. That vine really knows how to hold on. I've been clipping away at some invasive ivy that has been climbing my yard trees. The previous owners thought it was a good idea to have the ivy but it sure takes over.
Here's a shot I made through the windshield with my cell phone as we were driving to visit friends at their campsite.
Quint, that's an impressive photo, and with a cell phone through the windshield makes it even more impressive.
Hi Rich. I haven't figured out what these climbing woody vines gain by doing that. And WOW - that root is sure doing some damage. About 35-40 years ago in my area the city planted some variety of pine in the area between the sidewalk and the street. I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time, but now the roots of many of those pines are breaking into the main water lines. The trees also spread needles and cones all over our yards, plus at certain times of the year we deal with clouds of yellow pollen. And in other nearby areas different sorts of trees are really buckling the sidewalks, sometimes by as much as 10-12 incbes. All this has cost the city a lot of money in removing the trees, replacing damaged water lines, and reimbursing homeowners for expenses incurred.

Dave, many years ago our city fathers planted trees along the sidewalk on main street. Now many have been removed due to the roots buckling the sidewalks. Not a good idea. Your pine trees are a big problem!
Rich, that does look like a snake....LOL! I have elm trees, and their roots eventually grow above ground, causing me headaches on the lawn mower (also back aches from all the jostling over the roots!)
When I was a kid, I lived in a big city, and the sidewalks with trees were a lawsuit waiting to happen. Us kids on fasten-to-your-shoe roller skates hated them!
