Thursday 15 August, 2024 - Dave - 08-22-2024 Sunrise during my early walk today... RE: Thursday 15 August, 2024 - Rich - 08-22-2024 Dave, really an interesting sunrise with the sky detail and color along with the two backlit palm trees shining in the background. Some photos from my excursion to the carnival last night. Sky was bland but lots of other color. The Plaza next to the Plaza was new in 2020. Lots of free entertainment during the warm weather months. Our Church had a service there a few weeks ago. Will post a few of the rides in another thread, The Large murals showing are of Bob Barker and Billy Mills , both famous South Dakotans which was the 2024 Theme. They will be replaced after this week. RE: Thursday 15 August, 2024 - Dave - 08-23-2024 Thanks Rich. You hit on the things that caught my eye. During processing I decided to intensify the orange at the horizon; not to make it an "in your face" orange, just enough to work well with the deep blues of the sky. Two very notable South Dakotans. What a long and successful career Bob Barker has. And if I remember correctly, Billy Mills' was the runner (I'm thinking a distance runner, and 10,000 meters came to mind) who won the first US medal in a long time (maybe first ever) at his distance. Wasn't he at least partly Native American? Note: I just Googled Billy Mills and was surprised that my recollection was mostly accurate.. Yes, he won Gold in the 10,000 meters in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. And apparently he was 100% Oglala Lakota and raised in the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. I just wish my rapidly deteriorating short-term memory was as reliable as these long-term ones. RE: Thursday 15 August, 2024 - Rich - 08-23-2024 Dave, Perfectly done sky rendition. Looks very natural. Thanks for taking an interest in the murals. Well done on Billy Mills info! We had a Billy Mills day to honor him with the keys to the City and a Billy Mills Day proclamation Jan 24th, 2024. Photo showing a better view of the mural and Billy speaking at the ceremony. Bob Barker was born in Darrington, Washington, and spent most of his youth on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in Mission, South Dakota.[2] The U.S. Indian Census Rolls, 1885–1940, list Barker as a citizen of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, which the tribe publicly confirmed.[3][4] His mother, Matilda ("Tillie") Valandra (née Matilda Kent Tarleton), was a schoolteacher; his father, Byron John Barker, was the foreman on the electrical high line through the state of Washington. As Barker's father was one-quarter Sioux,[5] and his mother non-Native, Barker was one-eighth Sioux.[6] Barker attended the grade school on the Rosebud Reservation where his mother was a teacher.[5] Barker once said, "I've always bragged about being part Indian, because they are a people to be proud of. And the Sioux were the greatest warriors of them all. RE: Thursday 15 August, 2024 - Dave - 08-23-2024 Thank you Rich. WOW! I had no idea that Bob Barker had such a strong Native American lineage. Very cool. And IMO, Billy Mills' accomplishments rank right up there with those of Jim Thorpe. |
