Saturday & Sunday, May 18th & May 19th 2024. - Rich - 05-18-2024 Greetings All! A hot day yesterday for May, in the 90's. Cold front came through and now in the 60's. These photos show a replica of the boats used by Lewis and Clark on their exploration up the Missouri River. This is a museum at Sioux City Iowa. They did use poles to manually power the boat. Looking at the deck, the cross wood bars across the deck is for traction when using poles. Very interesting museum. RE: Saturday & Sunday, May 18th & May 19th 2024. - Dave - 05-19-2024 Thanks for starting a Weekender, Rich. And thanks for the fine photos of a fascinating and important part of U.S. history. According to Wikipedia: President Thomas Jefferson commissioned this expedition after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. It was led by Meriwether Lewis and his friend William Clark, joined by as many as 45 other volunteers. It began in Illinois on May 14, 1804, crossed the continental dive and eventually reached the Pacific Ocean on November 7, 1805. The expedition returned to St. Louis on September 23, 1806. Along the way, the expedition formed relationships with about 2 dozen Native American nations, and although a few of these relationships were problematic, the rest of the nations provided invaluable help. I think it is no exaggeration to say that the Native Americans saved the expedition. In contrast to the amicable help from most of the Indian nations, Spain sent four expeditions of 52 armed mercenaries to intercept and imprison the members of the Lewis & Clark expedition. However, these Spanish forces were never able to catch up to the US expedition, which covered an amazing 70 to 80 miles (110 to 130 km) a day. I admire the bravery of the members of the expedition, and I salute the Indian nations for their help in making the expedition a success. ======================================================== All I have to share is another of the yellow rose photos taken 3 days ago... RE: Saturday & Sunday, May 18th & May 19th 2024. - Quint - 05-19-2024 Beauty of a boat, Rich. Thanks for sharing. Fort Clatsop, near Astoria, Oregon, is a great place to learn more about their journey. Hi, Dave. Great looking rose shot. RE: Saturday & Sunday, May 18th & May 19th 2024. - Rich - 05-19-2024 Thanks Dave, and thanks for the history lesson! I like this view of a rose! Nice to see all the "rings" inside! Thanks Steve! |
