Weekend May 11-12, 2024 - Don - 05-11-2024 Welcome to the weekend. Should be a nice day here today with the rain gone and sun shining. Saw this radiator in one of the historic buildings we visited on our trip. Interesting detail. RE: Weekend May 11-12, 2024 - Dave - 05-11-2024 Don, that's very ornate for something as prosaic as a radiator. Good eye, and flawless execution, as always. I love this photo. My Friday morning walk was early, so it was not yet full light. I managed to find a clear shot (after bending some weeds out of the way) of some of the Ketchup & Mustard roses that late friend Ron tended so carefully. I was planning on brightening the photo but then decided that the half light looked pretty good, so I left most of it alone and concentrated my brightening on the COI. I cropped for composition, and really liked the diagonal from top left to lower right. I wish us all a safe, happy, and productive weekend. RE: Weekend May 11-12, 2024 - Quint - 05-11-2024 Great looking shots. I never saw such a fancy radiator, Don. The rose shot is a gem, Dave. I like the darker exposure and highlighting the rose. Busy here with the garden and watching our new addition to our little home. The extra bathroom and large sunny room will be appreciated. Clam digging the last two days. Thursday I was after the big, deep, gapers and foolishly lost my cell phone while lying face down and reaching as far as I could to pull up a monster clam. I put it in my unzipped wader pocket and it most likely fell out. By the time I got back to the pickup the tide came in and it was a goner. New one on order. Fantastic weather here and seeing lots of northern light pictures from friends and neighbors. RE: Weekend May 11-12, 2024 - Rich - 05-11-2024 Wow Don, that is an oldie! Good capture and the composition really shows it off! Dave, what can I say except: This is the most exquisite: Definition "marked by flawless craftsmanship or by beautiful, ingenious, delicate, or elaborate execution" emotional photo I have ever seen! A proud moment and tribute to Ron's Roses. Very Well Done! A froggy day at Pebble Beach. RE: Weekend May 11-12, 2024 - Dreamin - 05-11-2024 Don, vintage things used to be more ornate, from buildings to the common radiator!! So much has been lost .......todays trend seems to be minimalism......Your radiator shot shows so much detail. Well done! Dave, I agree with what Rich said. This is one of the most beautiful rose shots you have posted. WOW indeed!! Steve, so sorry about your phone.....I hope the clams were well worth it....phones are not cheap. Rich, I love foggy shots! That looks like a nice place to play. RE: Weekend May 11-12, 2024 - Dave - 05-12-2024 Thank you, folks, for your very kind reactions to my K & M roses photo. An excellent local photographer and I talk often, and she says that photography is all about light and luck. I would add to that by saying "light, luck, and labor", meaning take photos every day because you're not gonna get many great shots without taking hundreds of not-so-great shots. I wasn't expecting much from my photo because in my experience floral shots with medium to dark reds and medium to dark greens seldom succeed; I think because you end up with an image that is all middle to dark in value. Even with my lightening of the main blossom, this becomes obvious if you convert my finished version to grayscale. Quint, thank you. A "gem" that means a lot to me. Sorry about your cell phone. Rich, all I can say is WOW! Thank you! Great photo at Pebble Beach. Do you know what hole that is? My guess is maybe the famous 18th. I golfed from age 6 or 7 into my late 50s, when back issues made playing golf too painful. One of my regrets is that I never got to play at Pebble Beach. (Another regret is that I never got a hole-in-one; came within inches a few times, but never got the ace. ) Natalie, high praise from someone I admire. Thank you! BTW, saying Pebble Beach looks like a nice place to play is like saying Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy were a pretty good team, or Taylor Swift has had some success, or Leonardo da Vinci was competent in a couple of different areas. Hummingbird update: Well, our hummingbird (almost certainly an Anna's Hummingbird) finished building her nest and is now incubating. Anna's typically lay 2 clutches a year, each with 2 eggs (layed a day or two apart if I remember correctly). I don't know how many eggs are in the nest because it is pretty high up so it's hard to peer down into it. The mama is still pretty skittish and darts from the nest when we slowly open the front door and approach. I'm hoping she'll learn that we aren't a threat, which could mean she will allows us closer. For right now photos are hard to get. RE: Weekend May 11-12, 2024 - Rich - 05-12-2024 Thanks Natalie and Dave! Yes Dave the 18th. A classic finishing hole. Too bad you had to give up golf. I didn't play at all last year as I had hip replacement surgery. Anxious to try out my new hip this year. RE: Weekend May 11-12, 2024 - Man From Ironbark - 05-13-2024 I have only had the one game of golf. On a unique course but not so famous as Pebble Beach. This photo is well captured indeed. Like Dave, I agree it is more ornate than I've ever seen on something so common as a radiator. Thanks for that well composed image, Don. Dave, you have a talent for taking the thorns away from the beauty in a rose. The trick Dave, is to move very slowly and don't try to keep your eye on the bird. Go about your business as if the bird isn't there and they grow more used to you. Of course it helps to have food plants nearby.
RE: Weekend May 11-12, 2024 - Dave - 05-13-2024 MFI, thanks for your comment about my floral photos. And thanks for the tips about not startling the wee hummer. I do move very slowly and on good days smoothly. I also try to remember to not wear a brightly colored hat - our hummers seem especially tuned in to red, and to a lesser degree to yellow. There are nearby sources of nectar (various flowers and a feeder). RE: Weekend May 11-12, 2024 - Dreamin - 05-13-2024 Dave said, "Natalie, high praise from someone I admire." I'm flattered. Thank you. About the hummers....I once wore a shirt that was like a Hawaiian shirt with flowers all over it. The hummers came to me, checking out the flowers...I was almost frightened! Also, you see on FB people sit calmly and hold a small cap with sugar water and eventually the hummers will drink from it.....takes a lot of patience!! |
