TGIF, folks.

Wednesday was one of those fine "after the rain" days when things look and small clean and the light has a special quality - a good situation for outdoor photography.

A few houses down the street...

Have yourselves a safe, happy, and productive weekend.

Quite a color pop Dave. Nicely done. I tried the frame method in PS Elements this morning but I couldn't get the added layer to move, so I need to play around with it some more.

Here are a couple more from recent trips. The bird is a Painted Redstart, which I had never heard of, until it showed up in the little park right across the street from where we were staying in Laredo. Also another early morning street scene in Laredo. The vans are what were used to get us to the birding spots. Lastly is a leaf that I saw somewhere in central America on one of our port stops on the Panama Canal cruise.

It was raining like heck this morning here, temp around 61, but seems to have slacked off now. If it clears a bit later I hope to take the motorcycle out for a spin.

Thanks Don. Yes, colors seem cleaner and more intense on a sunny morning just after rains stop.

Three very nice ones, Don - the Painted Redstart is striking, the street scene is evocative, and the leaf looks to me kinda like an undersea creature.

I think I know why you couldn't move the new layers to the bottom: it's probably because the image is in a format that doesn't support layers. To get around this: when you open such a file in Elements, it probably shows just one layer and if your Elements workspace is set up to show the layers you'll see a thumbnail of the image (probably named Background) and to the right of that is a something that looks like an X - click that and the name should change to Layer 0 or something like that, and you should be able to drag new layers to the bottom.

Dave, those leaves are so bright and cheerful.
Don, that's a bright breasted bird! Vans took you out to the spots, what fun!!That is an interesting curvy leaf, love it! Nice find!

I used TopazStudio2 to frame this one......I DID find that tab that allowed an adjustment of the mat! Look for it, Don...it's there!

By the way, when I was in college and putting mats on my photos, it was recommended to make the bottom space a tad larger than the three other sides....? Anyone else know about this?
I found this by googling: Contemporary matting tends to have even mat borders on all sides, while more traditional styles might have a noticeably wider border at the bottom. This gives a feeling of support for the heavy piece, makes it more balanced and easier on the eyes. Then it says use your own judgement and preference.

Thanks Natalie.

Very fine photo (Eastern Bluebird, I assume). He is posing so nicely for you, and I think he would have smiled for the camera if he could.

Yes, I've heard of a little extra at the bottom of the mat. The only reason I'd consider doing that is if I planned to sign the mat. Otherwise, I don't see the point.

Natalie,
When I was in high school my Art Teacher had us making mats. We were instructed to make the bottom wider and also the top wider than the sides [but not as wide as the bottom].... It took me a long time to adopt the all 4 sides are the same size. I also liked your image.
Don,
Yup all 3 are fine.
Dave,
Yours is fab.

Dave, you can't beat red and yellow for impact! Must be the reason for stop signs red and caution yellow!

Don, awesome bird photo! You got a catchlight in the eye too!

Nice vans! A quiet time of day!

Interesting leaf!

Natalie, good capture!
Interesting info on matting!
I was told by a professional framer that a white mat should not be used unless required by a museum for consistency in the gallery. The reason being that the eye goes to the brightest part of the photo/art work. If the mat is white then that is where the eye lands first.

Both Don and Natalie's birds are definitely good watercolor subjects. I would like permission to paint them in the future with a free print sent to you when done. I have a flicker to paint for a friend first so it might be a while.

Greetings Grant!
