TGIF everyone.

Still going through my archives; this is from early 2019...

It's a variety of Oxalis, often found in my neighborhood in the meter wide strip between the sidewalk and the street.

I think it's a fine-looking little flower, but in some parts of the world is considered an unwanted invasive plant the spreads rapidly by long roots that become runners with numerous bulbs. In Australia, for example, it is definitely persona non grata - when it takes over sheep grazing areas the sheep eagerly consume it but the high concentration of oxalic acid can be fatal to them.

Hello and welcome to the weekend.
I took down the Christmas tree and so now I feel that my holiday "DAYS" are officially over.
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the great images this past week and I apologize for jumping in so late to comment.

Grant, your photos of your sons have made me smile. These are top-notch captures.  Are you getting lots of opportunities to take photos of your grandkids now?  Do your children live close to you since your last move?

Dave, I was sorry to hear about your recent fall and am glad that you had nothing broken.  For years I couldn't understand how someone could fall off a curb and twist their ankle, but now I get it.  I almost tripped yesterday while walking on the driveway to take out the garbage. And when I checked, no obstruction or protrusion should have affected my walking.  So, it is our turn now and no matter how careful one can be, " &#!$ Happens".  I have enjoyed seeing your "best of the best" images from your archives.  Today's yellow flowers brighten another gloomy day around here.

Sorry to hear about your camera problems.  I hope it can be fixed and it doesn't cost as much as expected.  I liked your most recent capture too of the overly painted door hinge.  It was a great find.

Peter, the firework display was impressive.  Thanks for sharing the links.

Rich, I LOVED the country gas station Painterly Image, my kind of photo and transformation.

Well, I am going to assume that I have not shared this photo from last month's trip to take photos fo the Polar Express flying past me and my fellow photo club members.  I came home rather disappointed because I knew that I had not gotten any "NEW" shots of the train although it was in the best condition of the three times we had photographed it.  Our club went to all the same spots to photograph the train on its way to its final destination, the pretend "NORTH POLE".

Below is the only shot that I got that was new.  It turns out that I was standing on someone's private property when I took the shot and as I was walking off the grounds, the owner of the house came up to me and asked politely to never stand on her property again.
Yes, there was a lot of tweaking done to this photo, removing two cars, erasing a woman taking a photo with a cell phone, power lines,  and poles, etc. It was a gloomy day and as a result, I added the orange overlay to increase the steam cloud definition and warm up the photo.

I first sent this photo to my engineer brother who remarked that it looked like a painting and he has trouble accepting things that have been altered.  I then sent him the original photo with all of the distracting cloned-out elements and bad lighting.  I had to laugh at his reaction.  He said that he understood why I "TAINTED" the photograph with color.  I guess the choice of the word "tainted" was the thing that I found funny.

Lorell,
Quite successful [most dreamy] I for one like the tainted image or should I say tinted.

Dave,
Good to hear that you are on the mend.

Winter finally made an appearance.
So I made something more of this image as well.

Dave, beautiful image! Perfect mat color! Glad your feeling better.

Lorell, welcome back, we missed you but understand why. I heard on the radio today in an ad for a grocery store, they were talking about super heros and capes. The owner said that an apron is a cape that is on backwards. I put women on a pedestal for all they do without complainig and carrying a youngster on their hip at the same time.
Thanks for your comment and I am completely gobsmacked by your photo! I am totally surprised by the woman's comment, Bah Humbug!

Grant, interesting treatment, looks like a blueprint!

RE: Friday, 5 January 2024 - Man From Ironbark - 01-05-2024

Dave: Outstanding shot of the Oxalis. Your description of the plant was quite excellent and I can add to that with the statement, apart from the taste it is also known as soursop because it sours the soil and renders it useful only to Oxalis. The reason is it considered toxic in to stock Australia is because the stock only eat it in quantity when all else is gone due to dry conditions.

Lorell: Awesome work on the train shot. It would be a great wall poster or indeed a whole wall print. Loved the comment from your brother. The lady with the land may have been more easy if you had asked permission first.

Grant: You really put more Brr into that photo. Smile

Anyone got any ideas for the January challenge?

RE: Friday, 5 January 2024 - Dave - 01-06-2024

Lorell, thanks for your thoughts about my latest self-inflicted mishap.

That's great work!

You nailed all the individual aspects, and that made the image work.

Some of the details stand out to me:

Ideal range of values - the variety of lights and darks couldn't be better. Where darks are next to lights the contrast is well-managed, avoiding the fault of too much of being overdone that I am prone to.

The composition is good in many ways: COI is well-positioned, I admire how you bracketed the train with the darker trees and the RR XING light posts, and you have some good leading lines.

Very nice mix of soft vs sharp.

The orange overlay unifies the image, and you have subtle enough variety of colors (some more red, another more yellow) to heighten the interest.

The minor aspect of some of the thin branches being dark while others are light is a nice touch - you don't miss a thing.

Thanks Grant. My ego and confidence took more harm than my body did.

You may not be looking forwarding to the cold winter, but I sure am looking forward to seeing more of your often stark, often abstract images.

Thank you Rich. I try to make the mat color slightly neutral but sometimes it turns out too gray. And I see now that I should have made the thin frame darker.

Thank you MFI.

I wasn't aware that Oxalis makes the soil useless to other flora. I appreciate knowing that.

THANK YOU ALL for the generous comments.
At the Christmas party for the Photoclub, we had over 200 photos presented that evening. There were probably about 20 of the train. Mine was the only one to get Ohhhh and Ahhhhs when it came on the screen. I was pretty happy that night. That is the reaction that I look forward to, sort of an involuntary sound coming from the mouth of others.

Thanks again.

Grant, I like the "BLUE CHILL" that you added to the composition. It created a chilling mood that comes as a warning of what lies ahead.

Dave, You are so generous with your time and praise. I do not want to share the original. It would be like doing a magic trick and then showing the audience how it is done. The trick isn't that good anymore.
