Monday, Oct 30, 2023 - Don - 10-30-2023

Last Monday in this month. Another year will soon be gone...

Had a bit of drama yesterday when I went to pick up my photos from the Artist Guild exhibition. The original entry form indicated the art work was to be picked up on 29 Oct from 12 until 3. I knew the library didn't open until 1:30 on Sun but figured they had made special arrangements for the pickup. So DW and I (and several other CAG members) show up at 12, no one there. Library closed. After a few phone calls we find out the time for pickup had been changed to the previous day, Saturday. Apparently the word did not get out to everyone. So, today I have to call the branch manager to arrange a pickup, as do all the other members who did not "get the word". Oh, and the entry form says there will be a $35 storage fee if the artwork is not picked up. So this could be interesting if the library tries to charge us for the "missed date". Grrr.  And no, I will not be renewing my membership for next year. I can sort of understand changing the date and time, but they did not do a good job of making sure everyone got the word. Good way to start the week.

So, I hope others had a better Sunday than I did and have a great week ahead.

I did upload more photos to my Flickr account this morning and will likely upgrade to the Pro version soon.

Don, I had a similar experience some months ago. I rarely write paper checks but had a need to write one, and discovered I was out of checks so I ordered the minimum number from my bank's website then walked to my local branch to get a few temporary checks. They told me I could buy some, I think at $1.50 each. I objected and mentioned that I just ordered 200 checks from their website, at no cost, and the teller said in that case the temp checks were free.

I struggle to understand this. I can get 200 free checks, ones that cost the bank a lot more than the temp ones to print and ship, but they charge $1.50 each for temporary checks that probably cost them no more than $0.25 each.

I'll check out your new Flickr photos this afternoon.

Meanwhile, here's a colorful floral from my archives to brighten the day...

Yes, very colorful Dave.

Retrieving my photos turned out to be relatively painless. I called the branch manager and she had the photos taken down to the main desk where I was able to pick them up with no issue. So now I have 2 more 11x14 framed prints that I will never sell. Sad

Not much activity today.

Dave, it is about the dodgy economics involved in talking paperless.
I really do think that we should be listening to scientists rather than economists.
I do really like the yellow in the change from red to pink. Smile

Don, good to hear that you resolved the issue with the library. Maybe you could give the prints as Christmas presents?

Don, excellent additions to your Flickr. Smile

Hi Dave, Don, and Peter.
Happy Monday.
Don, I am glad things worked out well for you regarding retrieving your framed art It is too bad that they would let you print and then glue them onto foam poster board. That really is a nice effect and represents the photographs well. I learned the hard way, though, to buy good paper spray glue specifically for photographs. That is how we do it for our club's print competitions.

I remember one photograph that a gal at the club submitted. I swear that she used Elmer's Glue. OMG, the print was so wobbly. It was sad and funny at the same time.

Dave, I would have never used a RED frame for this floral composition. But I have to admit, I really think it works great. I like the yellow peeking out from in between the two shades of red. Good eye, Dave.

Some superb photos on your Flickr site, Don.

I've been adding 2 to 8 photos a day to mine.

Some of you may remember the thread I posted years ago on WetCanvas! that documented an Anna's hummingbird building a nest just 3 paces from my front door, laying then incubating the eggs. Then I followed the two chicks as they progressed for bald and blind, to looking like hedgehogs, to fully fledged and ready to leave the nest.

I created an Album of Flickr called Annie's Story to post some of the same photos. I'm almost finished with that album - just a couple more photos to process and add.

These nearly 6 years later I still consider those 3 weeks in early 2018 to be wondrous. Mama hummer and chicks got used to me and my camera being mere inches from them, and it was a thrill to capture much of it with the camera.

Yeah, it was pretty specific that the work had to be framed and ready to hang. Of course, the majority of the entries were "real art", i.e., oil, watercolor, etc. I say "real art" because I'm afraid that many of the Guild members probably don't consider photography as true art. I seem to remember from back in the day I used a special process to mount photos on some kind of backing board, like a mat board. I believe it was heat activated so I carefully used an iron to get the photo on the mat. Maybe I am not remembering that correctly. Might have to Google that.

Dave, I did enjoy the photos of the hummingbird and the story they told. About the only regular species of HB here is the Ruby-throated. DW and I used to enjoy seeing some different species when we visited our DD's family in California, or on other visits out west. One of our excursions on the Panama Canal cruise is in Costa Rica.  From the description: " The tour starts with a short downhill walk that leads to an open hummingbird garden, where many species of these tiny, brightly colored birds gather around and amaze you with their spectacular acrobatic maneuvers. Then, the more adventurous portion of this tour commences as you arrive at the first of four suspended bridges that cover over half a mile of verdant terrain, and rise up to 126 feet above the ground. As you continue your way over rivers and cascades your senses will be delighted as your naturalist guide points out the most outstanding features of this misty forest. Look for many species of birds, butterflies and small mammals, and flora such as orchids, heliconias, ferns, bromeliads and more. "
We have often talked about birding in Costa Rica, so at least we will be able to get in a short bit of birding. Of course we do have a bit of concern since the excursion is listed as physically demanding, but I think we can do it. I just wish I could take my 120-600mm lens, but for the hassle of taking it and the limited time I would use it, I don't think it is worth it. I will have the 24-200 on my Z6 which will have to do.

Giving prints as presents is an excellent idea, Peter. I had already decided to gift the print of the boats at sunset that I printed for the competition to some friends of mine who really love the little coastal town where I took the photo. They go down there all the time, so I thought they might like that print.
