Thursday, Aug 31, 2023 - Don - 08-31-2023

Good morning everyone. We missed the brunt of the recent hurricane, just got a little rain. South of us were not so lucky though.

Thinking about entering the annual Artist Guild competition and trying to pick 2 images. I have about 6 selected so far, but I think these are the top 3 contenders. I need to eliminate one of them. I might do a little edit tweaking in PS once I select the 2 I plan to enter, for example cleaning up some of the trash in image2.

Don, I like all three. The yellows buds have good impact. The boat scene has an amazing sky. It could use a little more detail in the shadows. The ruins have an isolated feeling which is good.
Good job!

What a nice night for Mooning (pun intended.) I found the Blue super moon with a little help from Photoshop but Saturn was hiding.

Hi Don, and thanks for starting the Daily.

Hard to pick among your 3 final candidates.

The first is an impressive image: nice diagonal and great colors (the gray and yellow/orange combo is a favorite of mine). A subtly superior photo.

The second has tremendous impact, and again that nice gray & gold combination colors. Great WOW factor, faultless values, and terrific sky.

The third features excellent values, a strong composition, interesting sky, and a foreground that initially grabs the eye but then somehow releases it to explore the rest of the image. The image has a feel of isolation and abandonment.

Hard to pick one because I think it will come down to the judges' preferences, but if I had to choose just one, I'd go with #2.

I see that you sent me a PM; I'll look at it in a few minutes.

Hi Rich. You posted while I was trying to find and correct my usual many typos. Wonderful photo of the blue Super Moon. Here a marine layer of clouds ruined any chance of seeing or shooting it.

Again from my archives {April 2018); this is one of a sequence of shots of a barn swallow - the only time I've seen and photographed one. I had to lean out far above the flood control channel (rather precariously, and something I wouldn't dare try these 5 years later) for the shots...

Hi all,
It was a cool night last evening, cool in temps and activities.
We arrived at the Car Cruise early and got a chance to walk around to the various BUSINESSES along Harper Ave to take photographs of some of the vintage beauties parked in their lots.  I wish I would have dressed warmer because it was a cool evening, low 60's and NO SUN until 7 pm!  The real show started at 5 pm and the three mile stretch was blocked off so cars could travel south three miles and then make a loop and travel three miles north the same road.  This gave us the chance to see several cars more than once.

For the first hour it was quiet and then at about 6:30, the driver's started revving their engines, burning rubber and blowing horns.  That atmosphere really changed and got a lot more exciting.  However, after being there since 4 pm, we were tired of smelling all the burnt rubber and loud noses, it was time for us older people to go home.  I am sure that some of those cars put on old tires just so they could burn rubber.

This car cruise is a lot smaller than the Dream cruise which takes place on the divided road with four three lanes of traffic on each side of a wide grassy medium.  Last night's roadway had only two lanes on each side of a left turn lane.  It was a lot more intimate as I sat on the curb and watched cars pass me within feet of my lens.

It was fun and good to get out with my camera.
I can't say that I got many good shots, but that was okay.  Going out with the photo club is always fun and bringing back memories is even better.

Don,
My favorite is #2.  Adding to Rich and Dave's remarks, I like the mood present and hope that you can recover some of the details in the two boats.  After the awesome sky catches you EYE, it is the two boats that will hold your interest as you look more closely at all the details.  Maybe you can lighten the names of the boats that appear on their sides, or the textures and apparatus on them, especially the one on the right.

If I had to pick a second, it would be #2.  I love the details and glow.  It is like the yellow fuzzies have lightbulbs in them.

Rich,
Last night my husband opened the side door to let out the dog and it looked like we had a flood light lighting up the drive way.  He pulled me outside to have me look at the moon.  Wow, was it bright.  Good capture, Rich.

Dave, that is a sweet little birdie. Nice crop and framing job too.

This firetruck looked really old.  I think it is partly made of wood as I can see painting pealing off of the front panel in front of the driver's legs.
The horn on this thing was really cool.

Thanks Dave! The swallow is a wonderful capture. Worth the effort. Nice that the rest of the scene blends in with the bird. Nice catchlight in the eye.

Thanks Lorell! Love that fire truck! a very early one.

Sounds like a wild time in the motor city! I am not a fan of burning rubber. We have a Pre Sturgis party here a few days before the Rally. The last couple of years they did a lot of tire burning, doing donuts on a two block stretch of Main. I didn't get downtown for photos as I was under house arrest for 6 weeks due to my hip recovery. Could only go out to the Dr. or Church.

Ha! I’m still around and happy to see you all are too!
Don, #2 is high impact! Love it.
They all are good but the sun dazzled fishing boats are beautiful!
Where was #3 taken?
Ahoy there Rich! Once in  blue moon……what a cool photo!

Hi Dave! Interesting color on your barn swallow!
I bet you have a good archive of birds by now!

Hi Lorell! You know I love fire trucks! That’s a great photo!
The truck is beautiful.

I have been keeping my sewing machines busy and staying inside because this has been an extremely hot summer. I can’t wait for cooler weather.
Florida family are all fine. The storm was north of them. They do need some rain.
The pasture grasses are brown and crunchy (son in law works/lives on a large cattle ranch)
I don’t have anything here to post and may not answer tonight, but will try to stop by tomorrow.
I did take my cameras out to make sure I remember how to use them! LOL.
Been a long time!
Good to see you all!

Patty, thanks and wonderful to hear from you again! Looking forward to your photos!

RE: Thursday, Aug 31, 2023 - Don - 09-01-2023

Good morning everyone. Good to see you back, Patty.

That is certainly a "blue" moon Rich. Smile

Barn Swallows are not easy to photograph Dave, seems they never stop flying. Nice capture.

I love the old firetruck Lorell. It has that "Lorell Look" too. Sometimes I can look at a photo and think, yep, that is one from Lorell. Especially some of your interior shots.

I appreciate all the comments on the possible photo entries, but I can't always tell which ones are being commented on. LOL. The close up of the buds was taken in Iceland, the sunset was taken on the Georgia coast in a little town called Darien, and the abandoned building was taken just as we were leaving Marathon, Texas, having spent a couple of days there visiting Big Bend N.P. I think most of you liked the sunrise of the boats so I'll work on it and repost later. The second one is still up for grabs though. I really like the fuzzy buds but looking at it again I wonder if it is a little too soft. I need to look at it again in LR and see how sharp it is. The 2 that I choose to enter will be printed 11x14.

It is Swifts that rarely alight. Swallows alight often.
