Where is Lorell, Patty and Natalie ?

RE: Monday, July 17, 2023 - Dave - 07-17-2023

Natalie has been unable to participate for some months now.

Patty visited briefly for a couple of day several weeks ago.

Maybe Lorell is away from home, trying to avoid smoke from the Canadian fires.

I hope all three ladies are safe and happy, and I sure wish they would return to us here.

It has been smokey here on and off [mostly on] for the last couple of weeks. Poor man's AC is not possible. We run Central Air as it uses refrigerant pumped into a coil in the furnace and does not require outside air as does a window unit.
Normally we open windows at night and close them in the heat of the day. We are mostly lucky that nights are cooler.

Natalie hasn't been here since early June. Patty checked in for a brief bit of time after I wondered whether or not she was coming back or if I should delete the account. Lorell logged in a couple of days ago. As far as I can tell, at least recently, it has been Dave and Peter have been keeping the forum going.

My daughter begins her long vacation to attend the Women's World Cup today, departing LAX at 10:00 PM local time for Auckland. It's a flight of just over 14 hours - too brutal for me to endure. She'll meet up with her husband who is already there in his role of Director of Communications for the US Women's National Team.

Daughter is also very much into what most of the world calls football but Americans call soccer. She started playing AYSO soccer at around age 7 and continued that until her high school years when she played on various club teams. After that she was a 4 year started in college, culminating in her being named Caption and MVP. Then she played in various adult women's leagues and at least 1 co-ed league for almost 10 years. And her job is also soccer-related: she has worked for 25 years for the company that owns the LA Galaxy of MSL, and is now Senior Director, Analytics & Research.

While cleaning out my photo archives yesterday I came across this series of photos (previously posted on WetCanvas!) of her in action many years ago.

1) closing in...

2) the slide tackle...

3) contact...

4) result was a foiled opponent's scoring chance and a turnover for her team...

I've made my World Cup predictions, but I doubt few here are interested them so I'll not detail them now.

I still call it soccer, I really don't care about having to tell other people which football I'm speaking of. Even though none of the others are actually football as such because half the time they carry the ball in their hands. They are all silly people running about getting kicked in the shins or banging their heads over a bit of over inflated leather.

AH but it is so entertaining. And for one that is just slightly athletic, I am impressed and blown away by the skills these athletes demonstrate.
Sports are FUN. I played racquetball on a travel league, I played baseball on a local team and I enjoyed the game of golf. It was all fun and also a good social activity. It is not only good for the body but also the mind. It is exercise.

I do wonder about Natalie. I know Patty is okay, but not hearing from Natalie worries me. I shall have to see if I have her email address.
LORELL

Dave. your daughter almost ended up doing the splits in the 2nd frame. Those are 4 great consecutive actions shots.
I cannot imagine being in a single plane for 14 hours. Did I read that right? How can they store enough gas for that long of a trip? I do not think I could do it either.

Thank you Lorell. I keep my cameras set on burst mode all the time.

I agree with you about the value of sports.

In addition to the enjoyment of participating and watching, sports can develop or reveal good qualities in youngsters, At least it did with my kids. Our son coached a girls high school JV basketball team for a season or two, and it both demonstrated and improved his people skills. And our daughter's early years in soccer taught her to never back down from anyone. They are both better for their years in sports.

Yes, you heard right - a 14 hour flight. She just emailed me that she arrived and is on her way to the arranged Airbnb apartment.

Basketball is more fun than football.
