Thursday, February 23, 2023 - Dave - 02-23-2023 Once again I'm awake way too early. So I might as well start us a Daily. Here's another morning Golden Hour photo from several days ago - a yellow rose in front of a house down at the end of the block. Trying to control the intensity of the yellows, I made 2 versions: on my monitor this one does the better job of capturing the rich early light without totally losing control of the yellows... My local weather forecast is for steady rain showers through Saturday night, although it's a few hours later in starting than predicted. Still, I'll probably get soaked by the time I start my 6:00 A.M. walk. But compared to what others have and will endure (Rich, your weather yesterday sounded brutal; Natalie, I hope you don't get hit too hard; Lorell, be thankful you are away in Florida), it's nothing to complain about. You all have yourselves a good day or evening. RE: Thursday, February 23, 2023 - Dreamin - 02-23-2023 Don't worry about my weather.....it's up and down, but where Maryland is located, and I'm on the peninsula of MD......we don't usually get anything really bad....protected by the gulf stream and the bay waters. We will get snow flurries on Saturday, but all will be fine by Sunday, and no accumulations......Now where Rich and Lorell live, oh, my! They are still in the throes of winter.....may it not be too harsh on them. Dave, this is a most beautiful rose.....lovely colors. Your yellows are spot on on my monitor.....love the background greens!! Sharp! Well shot!! Dave, I have a question about your choice of composition......you do this a lot.....you place the flower opening close to the edge, with more background behind it. Do you do this intentionally? Is it your intentional style? I was just wondering....To me, it creates a bit of drama/tension......where as I would follow (and don't ask me where I got this rule) I would folllow the rule of putting this rose closer to bottom left, so that the bud opens towards the top right with a larger portion of the back ground in the top right corner. To my eye, that would be more relaxing......but as I said, it may be the tension you are seeking on purpose.....Just wondering. RE: Thursday, February 23, 2023 - Adamphotoman - 02-23-2023 Dave, I like your compositions. I especially like how the stem is on an angle leading my eye into the picture. It would be too boring if the stem were straight up and down and if the flower was in the middle. In the end I just compose until it feels right. I trust my gut. Anyway I don't mind a bit of tension. Makes for a more interesting composition.... Hi Natalie ! RE: Thursday, February 23, 2023 - Dave - 02-23-2023 Natalie, thanks for your kind response to this yellow rose shot. And special thanks for your questions about my composition tendencies. Your observations will make me a better photographer; in fact they influenced most of the photos I took on this morning's walk. To answer your questions: 1) I wish I was better at composing in camera, but my final compositions are usually arrived at by cropping. 2) Sometimes a crop is determined by the need to eliminate distracting areas on any side of the subject. 3) Then I decide what I what to be my COI and make sure it isn't dead-center by positioning it in a good spot - sometimes using the "rule of thirds" overlay, other times by eye-balling it while striving for a composition in which the COI is a different distance from each 4 sides. 4) If I determine that a square crop is best, composing becomes more challenging. 5) I definitely am NOT trying to add tension to my floral photos. But thanks to your observations I now realize that I have been doing exactly that. In the case of this photo you said you would place the rose closest to the bottom left corner, leaving more space in the direction the flower is opening. Excellent advice! Kind of like a suggestion I've read for composing (in photos or when painting or drawing) birds in flight - always leave more empty space in front of the flying bird, not behind it. Thank you for taking the time to give me this valuable feedback. Grant, thank you too. I try to be aware of the angle of things likes stems, but I don't remember if I needed to rotate my crop to achieve an angle in this shot. With photos of other subjects (such as buildings), if I need something to serve as an eye-stopper I often edit to have one that is more vertical. RE: Thursday, February 23, 2023 - Man From Ironbark - 02-23-2023 Tension creates impact? Here's a jewel in the dark. Jewel spider, that is.
RE: Thursday, February 23, 2023 - Rich - 02-23-2023 Dave, a beauty of a rose! Prefectly exposed! Interesting discussion! Hi Grant and Natalie! Peter, now that is a little spooky! The brown is gone, the white is back This long winter will give no slack! Thanks all for your comments on our weather. It was terrible yesterday and last night but the sun is out today. I haven't heard how much we got but they were predicting 8-15 inches. Pretty puny by Grant's standards but enough for us! Here is what the condo area looked like this morning after clean up. RE: Thursday, February 23, 2023 - Dave - 02-23-2023 MFI, you noted that tension may create impact, and that's very true (your strong photo certainly has impact that suits it well). But depending on the subject and the mood the photographer is trying to capture and emphasize, sometimes tension is unsuitable, and instead of thinking impact in these cases a more subtle look may be more suitable. Possible examples: photos of babies (human and animal), other portraits, misty or foggy landscapes and seascapes, certain florals and other subjects where the main appeal is a smooth gradation of pastel colors, and lots more. In these kinds of cases the photographer may choose to create interest without tension or in-your-face impact. One thing I find endlessly fascinating about photography is that there are many approaches for getting the sort of image you are seeking. The challenge for me is to use the right approach for the mood of the image I envision. Hi Rich, and thank you. Those are pretty severe conditions, but you seem quite able to deal with it. I'm not. RE: Thursday, February 23, 2023 - Dreamin - 02-23-2023 Enjoyed the comments!! Peter, that is impact for sure! Nice that you got her in that spotlight! Gosh, Rich, they sure do get the cleanup done fast!! RE: Thursday, February 23, 2023 - Rich - 02-23-2023 (02-23-2023, 03:52 PM)Dreamin Wrote: Gosh, Rich, they sure do get the cleanup done fast!! We are fortunate to have a good company for that. The last storm of 25 inches (13 this time) cost us $900. RE: Thursday, February 23, 2023 - Man From Ironbark - 02-24-2023 All that snow equals a lot of water I'd like to have. Heres some subltle blues.
