Saturday and Sunday, September 17 & 18, 2022 - Luv2shoot - 09-17-2022

Welcome to the weekend all.
Had a busy week including attending my monthly Photo Club Meeting.

Hope that you have some fun planned for your weekend.

Here is one that I submitted for our club meeting.

RE: Saturday and Sunday, September 17 & 18, 2022 - Don - 09-17-2022

Good morning Lorell and thanks for starting the weekend for us. That photo should do well at the meeting - it is a killer shot. I really like it!

DW and I will be leaving in about an hour and a half for the drive over to Perry, Georgia to drop off some photos that I entered in the Georgia National Fair. Hoping I do better than last time where I got a couple of Honorable Mentions. My photos were 8x10 and I noticed that most of the "winners" were at least 11x14 so all 3 of my entries this time are 11x14. Maybe that will help.

I got my 4x5 pinhole camera shots developed yesterday and processed this morning. I only took 4 photos. Here are a couple, one of the little country church I posted previously and one taken below West Point Dam. I am trying out a different film for my 4x5 images, a somewhat less expensive film than the Ilford i was using. The reciprocity factor is pretty high but if taken in daylight is isn't too bad. ISO 100. I think I am going to like it. I need to get the "real" 4x5 camera out and give that a try.

Hope all have a good weekend.

Lorell, I, too, like your shot. You took advantage of the natural light coming in that window. That place looks so tidy....
Interesting shots with the pinhole camera, Don....Very vintage looking....

RE: Saturday and Sunday, September 17 & 18, 2022 - Dave - 09-17-2022

Looks like it was a challenging mux of values, Lorell. But you nailed it.

Very nice, Don. I'm convinced that you can produce professional photos with any camera of any quality.

Hi Natalie. I hope all is well with you.

It has been a frustrating week for me.

1) I'm still feeling slightly off. Sure hope this is something that will pass and not my new normal.

2) Trying to get refunds for 2 items I ordered from a major etailer for failed delivery and an unacceptably long wait for delivery, both from small overseas vendors. I finally got them to start processing refunds.

3) Then I got an email from my bank that an attempted purchase from the same etailer and using the same debit card I used to order the items referred to above had been declined because whoever tried to place the order entered the wrong expiration date of my card. In other words someone got access to most of the info of my debit card. I'm suspecting a data breach at my bank or at the etailer. I had to put a hold on the debit card, walk down to the nearest branch and withdraw enough cash to cover me until the new card arrives.

Trying to look on the positive side, I ended up walking for a near record number of steps and miles (about 5.25) yesterday. That's a good thing. On the other hand, I'm paying for those extra miles with aches and pains in my feet, legs, knees, back, and neck.

Back to the positive side; on my long walk to the bank I got a decent shot of part of an unusual flowering plant. The plant is maybe 8 feet tall, and the flowers are found at the end of a very long curving arm that arcs gracefully from the main plant. Whatever the plant is, it blossoms infrequently, so I'm fortunate to have gotten a photo of it in bloom...

Dave, hope you feel better soon and that it is NOT the way it will be in future.....I wish the same for me.....but getting old is part of it for me.....sigh....
I think your interesting flower is a canna ...they have huge leaves, can get very tall and blooms similar to your red ones.....pretty colors!

RE: Saturday and Sunday, September 17 & 18, 2022 - Rich - 09-17-2022

Lorell, well done "into the light!" Good highligh, shadow and mid tones. Excellent composition. I give it a 15 in N4C judging!

Don, darn good pinhole images. What is the exposure time?

Hi Natalie!

Dave, sorry to hear of the data breech and your aches and pains. Hope both clear up soon.
Nice photo of the flower. Another ketchup and mustard bloomer!

I spent an hour and a half on main for a cruise in of classic cars. Some different ones today. Wore me out though!

RE: Saturday and Sunday, September 17 & 18, 2022 - damar - 09-17-2022

Hello everyone!
Lorell, that is a beautifully lit work place (grease pit?)
Absolutely love the vintage vibe in both subject and rendering! This is a winner, so knock 'em over at the club!

Don, your exposures look perfect!
The dappled sunlight in the church lawn came out really nice too.
I'm impressed!

Dave, when it rains, it pours. Sorry for the monsoon you had these last few days.
(not talking weather)
I hope your ID is safe and you recover from your hike and ready for another.
5+ miles is pretty good!!!

Well, we drove up to the grist mill and loaded up on buckwheat.
(hopefully enough to last the winter)
We don't eat breakfast but do like to have pancakes and bacon occasionally
for supper.
(especially on a cold winter night when its already dark at 5)
Cozy or something!

Dave, [Image: doryanthes_palmeri_flower.jpg] Is this the plant? or is this the plant? [Image: 640px-GymeaLily1.jpg]

If so it is known as the Gymea lily and it is an Australian native. An ancient family of which there are only two species left.
The first is Gymea spear - Doryanthes palmeri
The second is Doryanthes excelsa. Doryanthes excelsa is an unusual plant which makes a striking addition to a large garden. Occurring naturally along the central coast of New South Wales, it has several popular names which reflect its size, appearance and distribution—Giant Lily, Flame Lily, Spear Lily, Illawarra Lily, Gymea Lily. A member of the family Doryanthaceae, D. excelsa belongs to an endemic genus of two species, of which it is the more widely cultivated. The other species, D. palmeri, occurs in the McPherson Ranges of southeastern Queensland.

I don't grow the Gymea lily but there are examples in my laocality that do grow well.

Here's a couple of ring-necked parrots utilising my currently copious weeds.

RE: Saturday and Sunday, September 17 & 18, 2022 - Luv2shoot - 09-18-2022

Oh wow, this thread is interesting.
I like all of the additions including (not in any specific order):

Peter's Botony information and photos regarding Dave's pretty capture of what I think are CANNA flowers.  I have them growing in my backyard and they sometimes reach 7 feet tall.  Mine are all red.  I like your bird shot of the pretty colored birds.  THey sure do stand out with their vibrant colors.

Patty's FILL THE FRAME candy collection.  I would be buying some of those if I went into that store.

Don's Pin hole authentic looking vintage photos.  You are definitely achieving the look that I think you are after.

Rich, Natalie, good to see you all. And thank you all for the overwhelmingly positive feedback on my Greace Pit Photo (I like the title, Patty and think I will use it when I post the image in FLICKR)

Blessing to All this Sunday.
LORELL

RE: Saturday and Sunday, September 17 & 18, 2022 - Dave - 09-18-2022

Thanks folks for the comments on my photo and for the sympathy regarding yesterday's troubles. I was hoping my aches and pains would quickly subside, and that's how it's going - I'm about 80% back to whatever is normal for me.

About the flower: my neighborhood has at least one variety of Canna blossoms, and they look nothing like the photo I posted. MFI, you posted two photos of what it might be. The spike in my photo is very long and growing horizontally about 3.5 feet above the ground, so it more closely resembles your first example.

Nice photos, damar and MFI, and Hi Lorell.

Natalie, you wrote about getting old; I have a feeling that I'm a few years ahead of you on that.

I'm low on red pepper flakes so yesterday I minced as finely as I could a jalapeno and a few habaneros then slowly (took about 6 hours) dehydrated them in‌ an over set to its lowest temp. This morning I crushed the small pieces even smaller, browned some plain diced potatoes and cooked a couple of eggs, topping both with a seasoning blend grabbed at random, some hot salsa, and sliced scallions, plus a cautiously small sprinkle of the dried hot pepper bits. It was a very tasty light breakfast. Now I'm watching football and looking forward to my lunch: a burger topped with a pub cheese of extra sharp cheddar and horseradish, some hearty Bush's Grillin' Beans, and two bacon wrapped cheese-filled jalapeno halves.

I hope you all are having a good weekend.
