Thursday, July 21, 2022 - Dave - 07-21-2022 Good day to all. When I finished processing the fruit still life I posted yesterday, I immediately thought it was a good candidate for a painterly version. Here's my first attempt, simulating a watercolor painting... RE: Thursday, July 21, 2022 - Rich - 07-21-2022 Interesting Dave, it does have some of the watercolor characteristics. Give it a go with your brushes! RE: Thursday, July 21, 2022 - Quint - 07-21-2022 Dave, well done. I have several still lifes my mother did in watercolor, oils and pastels. I photographed them for prints. Here's an example of some beets she did in watercolor. Hi, Rich. RE: Thursday, July 21, 2022 - Dreamin - 07-21-2022 Well, that's very dramatic, Dave....As Rich says, try it with your brushes for real!! Steve, that's a very good watercolor, your mom is very talented! Speaking of dentists ( Don said he had to go to the dentist a few days ago?) I broke a crown, and need to get another made, unfortunately an expensive job....not free like Don's problem....ah, well...... RE: Thursday, July 21, 2022 - Luv2shoot - 07-22-2022 Very nice, Dave and Steve. Dave, I agree that this still life was a good composition for a painterly revision. I like how it came out and the nice fade of light and shadows and the popping colors that are practically aglow. I agree with Rich, it would be a good inspiration for a watercolor painting. Steve, The lighting on the subject in your mom's painting is perfect. I think she was attracted to the gnarly roods of the beets and she sure did them justice. They have a personality of their own. But the thing I am most attracted to is the shadows she so perfectly painted. A very talented artist, your mom was. RE: Thursday, July 21, 2022 - Rich - 07-22-2022 Steve, I agree with Lorell on your Mom's painting. Color is spot on and the shadow work gives a 3D look to it. RE: Thursday, July 21, 2022 - Quint - 07-22-2022 Thanks, Lorell and Rich. I have more. Onions, Bok choy, bananas, melon, fish, boats, etc. She could really draw and quickly. Glad I was able to frame most originals and take good images that I print. RE: Thursday, July 21, 2022 - Dave - 07-23-2022 Thanks for the comments about my faux watercolor. Quint, that's a superior watercolor that your mother created. I agree with the comments from Natalie, Rich, and Lorell. I'm especially impressed with the shadows: varying values plus colors ranging from a cool purple-gray to a slightly warm make them interesting; most artists would likely paint the shadows as a flat, boring middle gray. It all comes together as a masterful and pleasingly loose, spontaneous painting. Also,, I'm impressed with the colors: I see something like cadmium red (or a similar more transparent hue) for the lightest red, then something like alizarin crimson for darker reds, and finally a warm blue (like ultramarine blue) for the darkest values on the beets. As for my own watercolor painting, my last 5 or 6 attempts have been terrible, so I have little enthusiasm right now for another attempt.
