Monday, Monday
So good to me

Photo taken last week...

I'm pleased with this one; to my eye it has a nice abstract look to it, although it's an accurate capture of the subject. (Many of you will probably recognize what it is; I suspect MFI certainly will.)

I also like the colors, the placement of contrasting values, and the textures of the background.

Thinking it might be good as a watercolor painting, I took another look to decide what to adjust to make a stronger potential painting. First I noticed the the three shapes just above center were aligned evenly, so I moved one down a bit. Then, in selected areas, I increased the color intensity and value contrasts, particularly those that are adjacent. I ended up with this as a guide to a painting...

You all have yourselves a good day and week.

Make your water colour painting and post it. Please do. I recognize the subject as tree bark but I don't know the species.
The subject lends itself to both hard edges and to gradient blended washes. All about how wet [or dry] the paper is.

There are over 800 species of Eucalypt and more recent taxonomical revisions have split those into three separate genera.
This tree is likley one previously known as Eucalyptus citriodora and is now known as Corymbia citriodora. Though that article mentions a common name of "spotted Gum" which I'd disagree with in that though the Spotted Gum may look similar, it is a different tree species. It would be known as Corymbia maculata. From the Latin maculatus = spotted.

Many would have noticed that I have a great interest in plants, trees in particular. Naturally I see and live with a lot of different Eucalyptus which are members of the Myrtaceae (Myrtles) as are so many Australian trees and shrubs. The ancestor of all myrtles is the Antarctic Beech.

Yes it would make a lovey watercolor.

Yes, it would be great inspiration for a watercolor.....reminds me of our sycamore trees......the bark peels every year, and makes for some remarkable textures......

Interesting abstract Dave, give it a try!

Thanks Grant, MFI, Natalie, and Rich, for the comments about my Eucalyptus photo and potential painting.

I think I will try the painting, but don't expect to see it soon. My last 4 or 5 painting attempts produced terrible results - if instead of trying to create paintings I had been cooking various dishes, they all would have to be described as inedible.

Any of these suitable for painting?
