Wednesday, March 23, 2022 - Luv2shoot - 03-23-2022 I got a real late start today but have got some needed chores down. Now it is time to play. Here are two shots from last week's visit to the Henry Ford Museum, also from the Apollo exhibit. The first is the cast of Neil Armstrong's hands. Each astronaut on the Apollo 15 flight had a cast of their hands made to ensure the proper fit of their gloves. Dexterity in a thick pressurized spaceship glove is challenging. If the gloves are too large, the astronauts have a difficult time sensing when they are touching something. If the gloves are too small, the gloves will press painfully against the fingertips and cause the astronauts to lose fingernails. Casts of all three astronaut's hands were made to make perfectly fitted gloves. Because Michael Collins wore his wedding ring when his cast was made (not pictured here), he had to wear his ring when he traveled on the mission on Appollo 11. The second are the molds of all three men aboard the spacecraft, from left to right: Pilot, Michael Collins Commander, Neil Armstrong Pilot, Edwin "BUZZ" Aldren RE: Wednesday, March 23, 2022 - Rich - 03-23-2022 Greetings all! Lorell, that is an interesting photo and story. Kind of spooky in a way, I like it! No photos here. The wind has been blowing up to 40 MPH gusts so has not been nice here. Staying inside and working on art. RE: Wednesday, March 23, 2022 - Quint - 03-23-2022 Nice "handywork" Lorell. Interesting info. My granddaughters are at a space museum and fun center today with grandma and my daughter is in central Oregon waiting for the right weather to launch their high altitude balloons that carry payloads for testing over 100,000 feet. We had a beautiful and warm day yesterday but back to the clouds and drizzle today. I got home from lap swimming and checked my little tomato and pepper plants in the greenhouse. It's a bit warmer in there but more sun would help. Yes, Rich, windy days move me indoors too. RE: Wednesday, March 23, 2022 - Dave - 03-23-2022 Very interesting, and of course well photographed, Lorell. Hi Rich. Quint, that's really cool that your granddaughter and daughter are into space exploration. Your daughter's planned balloon launch sounds fascinating and important. I really admire Buzz Aldrin. His post-NASA achievements, IMO, are even more impressive than his space flights. He has written a number of excellent books, at least one on how to best continue and expand NASA activities - especially a novel and efficient approach to a manned Mars landing. And he is one tough dude - still going strong at age 92, he could probably kick the butts of men half his age. OK, enough of my opinions. I'm low on photos worth sharing, but here's one taken about an hour ago on a mid-day walk in the heat (nearing 85-F or 29-C) of the glaring sun... RE: Wednesday, March 23, 2022 - Quint - 03-23-2022 Dave, I'll have to check out some of Buzz's books. They look well worth reading. Here's a link to where my daughter works and a bit of what they do: https://nsc.aero/2021/04/09/robotic-balloons-to-explore-venus-an-oregon-company-is-working-on-it/ RE: Wednesday, March 23, 2022 - Rich - 03-23-2022 Dave, yellow and purple, complementary colors. Look good together despite your glaring sun. Pretty warm for March! Quint, interesting company and projects. I wonder if they use Raven Industries balloons or make their own. Raven is in South Dakota about an hour away from me. RE: Wednesday, March 23, 2022 - Quint - 03-23-2022 They do make their own. Their place is a few miles from us and is a long building. Their is photos on their site of some manufacturing them. They launch some from here too. They have a nice web site. Here's one showing my daughter, Amanda. https://nsc.aero/careers/ RE: Wednesday, March 23, 2022 - Luv2shoot - 03-23-2022 Dave, that is such a cheerful and colorful looking composition. Thanks all for the comments about the astronaut's molds of their hands. Sure saw a lot of interesting and photographical things at the museum. Rich, yes president John F. Kennedy's limo from Dallas is still at the Henry Ford Museum. It was one of the first things that you see when you walk into the main entrance. I was so pumped to take photographs of the historic vehicle to be terribly key down once we presented our tickets to the attendant. The entire car was totally covered by a thick plastic tarp. There were painters in the area and there was some white paint being applied to the walls and ceiling. We asked if the tarp would be removed soon, and was told not for several days. I got to tell you that I git goosebumps on the ride across town when we were talking about the items that were musts on our list to photograph. That was #1 on my list and Lincoln's chair was #2. So, I plan on going back with my daughter this summer and hopefully will have better luck. RE: Wednesday, March 23, 2022 - Rich - 03-23-2022 Steve, thanks for sharing the photo on the website of your daughter. Quite a wonderful career! Good to hear the Limo is still there. Too bad about the construction problem. Yes, definitely go back to see them. Well worth it! |
