Thursday October 2nd, 2025 - Dave - 10-02-2025

Nothing new to post so I went back to Feb 2 2017 for this shot of a hummingbird at an old feeder in our inner front yard.

I reprocessed it a few minutes ago.

My best guess is that it's an adult female Rufous; could also be adult female Allen's (the two are almost identical) but since the Rufous are more common here, I'll stick with that.

Nicely done, Dave. I really like the background, really makes the POI pop.

Seems the older we get the longer it takes to recover from any illness. Even though the Covid was no worse than a bad cold, the exhaustion lingers. Only just now beginning to feel normal again. Yesterday I replaced a broken switch in a ceiling fan, simply job, and it completely wore me out. But, enough complaining. Could have been like the first (and only other time I had Covid) where the sore throat was the worse I have ever had.

Looking at the membership of the forum, there are 2 who haven't been around for over a year, so they will probably be removed. Another will reach that point in a couple of weeks.

Nothing new from me either, so here is one I reprocessed that was taken on our Snake river cruise.

Beautiful Dave! Well exposed!

Don, Very true about the recovery time! Glad it wasn't any worse.
You have a talent for taking a mundane object and making it the star of the show! Well done, well spotted!

Looks like it is that time of year. I drive by this house a couple of times a day or more and he is always the first to decorate!
No fall colors here yet. It has been so hot and humid the trees think it is still summer.

RE: Thursday October 2nd, 2025 - Dave - 10-02-2025

Thanks Don.

I realize now that even though I brightened the bird about 15%, I should have gone stronger and maybe also bumped up the contrast of the bird.

I'm sorry that your Covid has led to exhaustion. or me, whether Covid or not, if I overexert myself it takes me a lot longer to recuperate than it. used to. Just one of those things that comes with aging.

I really like your photo. Too often with photos of this type (one object in color) the B&W parts look too harsh. But it looks like you kept just a touch of color, and that really ties the whole image together in a harmonious way. Nicely done.

There is one house in my neighborhood that decorates for different holidays throughout the year, and he's started his Halloween display. He puts an arch of thin white PVC pipes above the sidewalk and strings lights of appropriate colors on it. Then he creates a display of ghoulish characters and props in the front yard. I'm eager to see what he comes up with for this Halloween.

Good morning, Dave, Don, Rich and any others.
I enjoyed your images.

Here's a shot from a recent trip to Newport, Rhode Island.

RE: Thursday October 2nd, 2025 - Rich - 10-02-2025

Quint, Good to see you posting again! Very interesting! Shows the quaintness of the Rhode Island area! I was there many years ago and went through the Breakers Mansion.

RE: Thursday October 2nd, 2025 - Don - 10-02-2025

Hello Quint - good to see you posting. Some nice digs there. Smile

Rick, interesting how some folks really get into Halloween. I've never been one to decorate for any holiday. Pretty soon we will start seeing Christmas lights I suppose.

I went back to look at the original photo Dave, and it is pretty much what you see here. I didn't do any special processing to highlight the red, that's just the way the photo was.

I spent quite a bit of time today installing a trailer hitch on my Spyder, along with the associated wiring harness. Hope to soon have a small, tow behind, camping trailer. I never thought I would want to pull a trailer with the Spyder but when I saw a particular little camping trailer, I thought, "Why not?" It will be a lot more comfortable than a tent and a cot.

I've always had a soft spot for hummimngbird photos and Dave keeps on supplying excellent examples.

Never understood the whole Halloween thing and like Don I don't go in for Christmas dressing either.
The local children's teeth are not harmed by knocking on my door. Wink

Hi again, Quint. Smile Looks like Rhode Island hasn't got a Walmart yet?

Don, All the comforts of home eh. Wink

RE: Thursday October 2nd, 2025 - Quint - 10-02-2025

Thanks, Rich, Don, MFIB,

We didn't notice any Walmarts while there but I see there are 4 listed in the state.

While trying to negotiate a way out of the Melbourne peak hour after disembarking the Spirit of Tasmania, I directed the lady to head for Sunbury where I'd visited in 1973 for the rock festival. When we got there it was wall to wall new suburb construction and it already had a couple of big mall like shopping centres. Gone was the quaint country village I remembered. Even the old stone churches and other buildings were vanishing behind modern constructs.

Though it did get us onto a country back road skirting the ever expanding Melbourne city.
