Weekender, January 11-12, 2025 - Dave - 01-11-2025

I wish us all a good weekend.

I've already made my picks for the NFL's Wild Card playoff round:
AFC: LA Chargers over Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens over Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills over Denver Broncos
NFC: Philadelphia Eagles over Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers over Washington Commanders, Minnesota Vikings over LA Rams

Half a rose can still be pretty...

Wow. That's such a dramatic rose shot, Dave. Smile

More than simply, pretty.

Dave, I agree with Peter, very dramatic! Good exposure! Hope you are right about the Vikings!\

Here is a Mayan structure in Belize City.

Thanks MFI and Rich.

Sadly, the half rose is indicative of the state of Ron's roses. When Ron was tending the plants there were 10-15 thriving plants of various types, producing a total 50-60 beautiful blossoms. Now maybe 30% are just woody stems with no foliage or blossoms; maybe 40% manage to produce petals and rose hips, but no blossoms develop; and the rest may develop blossoms that are stunted and deformed, failing to produce any large, healthy blossoms.

This is what a portion of Ron's once gorgeous roses look like now (photo taken 01-10-2025)...

At the right edge, top half, there used to be 4 or 5 thriving rose plants including my favorite - the Ketchup & Mustard rose. Lower in the frame were 3 or 4 larger varieties of different types, colors, and scents. To the left of the line of rocks is a small part of a large area of small rounded stones and pebbles; Ron wouldn't allow any weeds to last there for more than a day - now the entire area is spoiled by dozens of tall, ugly weeds. Sad to witness.

Nice photos of the the mound. (Or are they photos of two different mounds?) Anyway, making a rough extrapolation from the height of the people in the first photo, it looks to be somewhere around 50 feet (15.24 meters) tall that's impressive engineering. I can't help but compare that to Monk's Mound at the Cahokia site in Illinois (across the Mississippi from St. Louis). Monk's Mound wasn't a stone mound. Instead, it's composed of earth, carried basket by basket by the native builders, eventually reaching a height of 100 feet (30.5 meters). Also impressive engineering. It is estimated that construction began around 900 A.D. and continued until around 1200 A.D.

Hello there fellas.
Blessings to all this Sunday and every day.

Rich, I enjoy seeing photos from your world travels.  Including the people in your images give the viewer the perspective of how huge these ruins are.

Dave, that is a dramatic capture of what is left of that once beautiful rose, but beauty comes in all shapes,  colors, and stages in life. As a matter of fact, for my photo club meeting on Thursday, our special Assignment is the Japanese art of  Kogarashi - A Cold Wind That Ushers in Winter. I got lucky yesterday when we woke up to an inch of fresh snow blanketing our grounds. My photo club has limited us to two photos per category since our club has grown so much.  That is okay with me especially since I have not done much with my camera for many months . But at least I could get out yesterday morning and take several shots that might be worthy of submitting for our Thursday night's show and tell.

I used one of my favorite zoom lenses to take this photo and although the details in this tiny twiggy sprout do not show up in this small file-sized image, the details should show well on the big TV screen we use to view our shared images.  I may or may not use this one.  I shall see what else I have to use.

Hi Ya, Peter.  Wink

Hi Lorell, and thanks.

It sounds like you are recuperating well - at least enough to get out and walk more. That's great, but I imagine there are good days and some bad days that you have to push through.

I was wrong on 2 of the NFL games yesterday. Tonight is LA Rams vs Minnesota, with Minnesota favored by 2.5 points. I think Minnesota will win by more than that because: 1) LA's powerful offense won't be able to score enough against Minnesota's defense; and 2) Minnesota's run offense, led by Barkely (who I think will get nearly 150 yards), will ouclassr LA's defense.

I'm sticking with Detroit to be in the Super Bowl, against either KC or Baltimore, and to win by less than 7 points.

I like your photo. It's simplicity combines with what I see as elegance make it a winner.

Dave Thanks and thanks for the interesting info. I believe two different mounds.
Ron's work and joy for the neighborhood is in a sad state of neglect. Sorry to see that.

Thanks Lorell, your photo reminds me of a painting journey I had years ago with Japanese Sumie painting. Very simpistic.
