Friday June 16th 2023 - Man From Ironbark - 06-15-2023

Of course since it is Friday here, I can beat others to the punch and start a new thread. Wink

Dug this out of my archive and thought it is just sharp enough but also has a painterly look.

Rainbow Lorikeet in my apricot tree. They seem to like the apricot buds after the fruit has gone and the leaves are beginning to turn.

OMG, there are a lot of parakeets in Florida and they are really noisy birds.  But I don't mind since they are pretty, it is nice to see them up close, I think ours looks a lot like yours, Peter.
Are your species talkative like ours.?
Thanks for starting our daily.

Here is the SECOND old building that I submitted for last night's photo club meeting.  This image looked pretty good on the screen. Another cell phone shot .  The members were impressed by the size of the barn and stated that this had to be a pretty wealthy farm way back when.
My title was "Back In Its Hay Day"

Such a colorful bird, MFI. How fortunate you are to have a variety of fauna and flora, much of it unique. Thanks for continuing to share it with us. Wonderfully colored Lorikeets. I imagine they ar quine noisy, but probably always entertaining.

Another winner, Lorell. The composition is rock solid, with the barn's prominence reinforced by the relative emptiness of the low horizon in the right 1/3. Usually having a large area of gray as the COI fails, but you made it work beautifully. Very effective sky; was that the original one or did you apply a replacement sky?

Here's a shot taken on an early morning walk 4 days ago; a closeup of a large growth of bougainvillea two houses south of mine. Other than a rotate/crop and sharpening, it needed very little processing...

TGIF, everyone. Have great weekend!

RE: Friday June 16th 2023 - Don - 06-16-2023

Love the colorful Lorikeets Peter. I'll bet they are noisy too.

Nice old barn Lorell and apt title as well.

Dave, I like how the yellow/white contrasts with the purple. Good job.

So yeah, been kinda absent the last few days. DS totaled his car (no injuries or anything) so we have been dealing with that. Got a check from the insurance yesterday so he has wheels again after visiting a local dealership.

Another photo from Iceland. I had walked down a steep, muddy path to the water to try to spot some seals across the way and DW decided to pass. Here she is waving to me as I came back up the hill.

Maybe eventually I will have some different photos to post.

RE: Friday June 16th 2023 - Luv2shoot - 06-16-2023

Thanks, Dave.
That is the original sky. Nothing added or removed frim the composition other than cropping in some to eliminate the farm house that was on the left. I was going to add some birds in the sky in the upper right but am trying to deal with this new “digital generation” that just appeared on everyone’s Photoshop Subscription software that I did NOT want to anything fake to this composition- One photographer used it for every photo he shared last night. He was honest with us and was sort of demonstrating the power of this NEW AI feature in Photoshop. But I see a rift developing between compositions that use these generated additives and those that do not. The results are so realistic and easy to do, It is going to become habit with most photographers. It will actually raise the bar and I am all for a challenge but somehow I feel like this REALLY IS CHEATING.

There is another feature that I wish I had in Lightroom or Photoshop and that is CONTENT AWARENESS. It does a nice job of extending perimeters where needed. Since I have such an old version of PS AND LR, I do not have those options to use. But if one is to keep up with the current evolution of photography, I may have to eventually have to join the movement before they pass me by.

Dave, the lighting and color in both of your photos was perfect today and yesterday was perfect. It appeared that you may have had an overcast day to capture the beautiful essence of these flowers. The faint soft purple in the background, like yesterday’s bark soft greens, enhances the composition much more than a solid black background. Nicely done a practically SOOTC image.

Time to clean the house.

Lorell

PS. Hey, Don. You snuck in with this cute photo of your DW.
I am happy that your son is safe. Songs like he got lucky.

RE: Friday June 16th 2023 - Dave - 06-16-2023

Thank you Don. The blossoms were much more to the red side but unexpectedly turned our purple. I liked how that looked so didn't color correct.

Sorry about the car, but glad there were no injuries.

Nice photo, again. More please.

RE: Friday June 16th 2023 - Man From Ironbark - 06-16-2023

Thanks for the comments. Lorell did you know this? There was only one species of parrot that was native to Florida, the Caroline Parakeet, but this is now extinct.

All of the parrots that you see often have been accidentally introduced by the exotic pet trade. Including the worlds most popular caged bird, the Australian budgerigar.

RE: Friday June 16th 2023 - Dave - 06-16-2023

Thank you Lorell.

I too have an uncomfortable feeling that the "digital generation" capability is a bad development. On the one hand, it's not very different from cloning out an unwanted area or moving part of a photo to a position that makes for a better composition. I've often cloned things out and once or twice moved something. But the important distinction to note is that I did it myself rather than having some sort of AI in editing software do for me.

So I too feel that this new capability in Photoshop is indeed cheating.

Hey - do you use Flickr? I'm thinking of trying it but have some concerns:

1) Flicker has no phone number for customer support.
2) They have no email for customer service.
3) And they have no chat available for customer service.
4) I have a number of questions that I need answered before I can decide whether to give Flickr a try:
  -  If I want people to view my photos, do they need to have a Flickr account?
  -  Can I block viewers of my photos from downloading them?
  -  What safeguards does Flickr have to protect my copyrights?
  -  Is Flickr Pro (the paid type of account rather than the much more limited free version) worth the cost ($60 a year, I believe)?
  -  Is Flickr a good site for photographers seeking helpful C&C?

I think these are pretty basic questions, but since there appears to be no way for me to ask Flickr these questions I'm reluctant to give them a try.

Do you have any information or advice for me about my Flickr concerns?

RE: Friday June 16th 2023 - Man From Ironbark - 06-17-2023

I've used Flickr for a good while and haven't really had problems apart from all the times it has changed hands.
At present it is under the guidance of Smugmug.
The free accounts have to be public.
I think they put a stop to the free accounts being able to hide images from the general public.
https://www.flickr.com/about
They do have email help.
https://www.flickrhelp.com/hc/en-us

I just noticed that I have 8,533 photos there.
I'd say I should arrange for someone to deal with it when I'm gone.

Anyway I was out rock clambering again today.

I too am not sure about this whole AI thing. I'm a hands on sort. I like to do it myself.

RE: Friday June 16th 2023 - Dave - 06-17-2023

Thanks for the info on Flickr, MFI.

I like your photo. An interesting tree, the greens vs the rusty colors work well, the blue-blacks of the rocks are very nice and help ground the photo, and I'm impressed with how well you handled the values.
